I’ve known this person for close to four years now and I can honestly say he is one of the smartest and most perceptive people I have ever met… and as expected he said something profound that I’ve been mauling over since our conversation.I’m fairly sure you have heard that famous John Rohn statement,‘You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.It’s a statement I have heard severally but never really took into account until my friend told me that one of the most overlooked factors for achieving success is the people you choose to surround yourself with, that they play a significant role in your character, your ambitions… and ultimately how successful you will be. Whether you realize it or not, the company you keep plays a huge role in who you are. Think about any period in your life when you were introduced to a totally new crowd, for example, when you transferred schools, or joined boarding school, or moved to a different city… Didn’t you adopt the new place’s slang, mannerisms, popular way of dressing, even their perceptions of various issues?Yes it’s much easier to be influenced by your environment as a kid but do not for a second assume that as a young adult or a grown up you are impervious, because I assure you that you are not.Spend enough time in any crowd and you are bound to pick up a trait, a habit, a point of view… or two. Coupled with your own thoughts, habits, mannerisms… what you pick up from the people around you integrates to determine who you become, what character you have, what thoughts you have, and what perceptions you have of the world.You may argue that you are a conscious, intelligent, and self-aware indivi dual who is not easily swayed by the crowd and this may all be true. But if you are constantly in an environment where you are surrounded by pessimistic, fear-based people, it is bound to impact your own confidence in yourself and the possibility of your dreams, therefore, slowing down your progression.However, if you surround yourself with confident, optimistic, and insanely ambitious people, you are bound to pick up on their confidence, which will influence you to fiercely believe in the possibility of your own visions and follow them through to the end.It quite simple, if you are spending time with people who are holding you back, you will lag behind, if you are spending time with people who are fueling the fire in your soul, you will thrive Its ‘simple mathematics’, so to speak.The purpose of this article is to demonstrate to you how the company you surround yourself with affects you, how you are drawn into them, and how it determines whether you will succeed or fail in the long run. This was not simply because of the perception society would have on us but also because of the impact that our friends would have on us.In my opinion, the perception of society on your character should be a lesser worry, because they could be wrong anyway and you can’t walk around worrying about what people think about you, that’s their business. Of more concern is the impact that the people you surround yourself with impact your character.‘Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and thinkers, but most all, surround yourself with those who see greatness within you, even when you dont see it yourself.’ Steve JobsEach day has 24 hours and of the 24, we spend an average of 10 hours with other peop le and in most cases unless you’re travelling, you spend time with the same people. In the hours you spend with others, most of it is spent engaging one another in conversation. Through these conversations you will pick up schools of thought, perceptions, character traits… even simple habits such as hand gestures, voice intonations, body postures…This may all sound so harmless and you may be thinking that you’re own character is strong enough to repel such subtle influences but observational learning has been defined to be a mode of learning where you learn through observing others. So while you may notice it, you may find yourself taking a similar posture to your best friend’s.If your best friend is a very confident person you will find yourself being more confident whenever you take up his posture, if he is not very confident you will find yourself feeling less confident whenever you take up his posture.Whether it is apparent to you or not, who you are as a person drifts towards the direction of the people you spend the most time with because all important traits are contagious your beliefs, values, mood, attitude, mannerisms, habits… You become exactly what you surround yourself with, it is a human inevitability that you will be influenced by your surroundings, which is why it is important to choose who you surround yourself very carefully.I remember a period in my life when I began surrounding myself with people whose character I admired. Smart people who were interested in books and growing their knowledge on numerous subjects, people who were interested in learning new concepts, who were not interested in being the conventional cool kids (even though that’s exactly what made them cool to me) and suddenly my view of the world expanded and there were all these possibilities, there were no limits. I was challenged to be more like that and as a result I pushed myself… and I thrived, I was happy with what I had become.Later in the second stage of my education, what I like to term as ‘teenage rebellion’ kicked in and I abandoned that environment and joined a rebellious crowd… I can’t explain how or why, I really don’t have an answer. But with this crowd the world was small, fueled by fleeting pleasures, like sneaking out of boarding school to get snacks we couldn’t get inside school, skipping study periods to play cards…This world was closed up, there were no ambitions for the future, there were funny conversations but none stimulating, you know the kind that fires you up inside and challenges you? In the midst of all our escapades I almost got myself expelled but luckily for me I realized that we were heading nowhere fast and I decided to go back to what felt honestly meaningful to me. I sought the company of books and the company of people whose characters I could genuinely say I admired and could learn something from.I don’t mean to bore you with my teenage rebellion stories, I’m certain you have your s too… it’s a stage of life that most of us go through I suppose. The point was simply to illustrate how different crowds will affect the kind of people we become in the long run. It is inevitable that the people you choose to spend the most time with will eventually rub off on you, and you will assimilate. Who you choose to spend time with will determine the path you will end up taking and their influence will ripple through all aspects of your life.One of our most fundamental needs as human beings is to be accepted, to belong, to be loved. We are always looking to make connections. But what connections are worth the effort? Each and every one of us desires to be prosperous and successful, but this can never happen if you are surrounding yourself with the wrong people. Make it a priority of yours to seek the company of ambitious people, and trust me, there is no shortage of those… you will find them as long as you’re lookingEverything of worth ever built began with the idea of an ambitious person who was determined to see his vision through to the end. You don’t even have to become best friends with each ambitious person you come across, you can simply engage them and learn what you can from them, learn how they think and how they perceive the world… even if for a moment, it will not be a waste of time.Now I am not encouraging the discrimination of any person who is different from you. If you happen to cross paths with a person who wants to pick up a few traits from you, you should under no circumstance dismiss them. There was a time you could have used a hand yourself in finding your path, let them feed off of your passion and ambition, there’s more than enough to go around… don’t be selfish.All I’m saying is, be very cautious who your biggest influences are, be watchful and avoid drifting in an environment filled with people who compromise your growth as a person and the development of your dreams and ambitions.HOW YOUR COMPANY DETERMINE S YOUR SUCCESS OR FAILUREI believe you are in agreement that the people you surround yourself with play a key role in whether you become successful or not. It doesnt matter how skilled you are, whether you were born into money, or even where you were born…Let’s go by John Rohn’s theory, and under the assumption that you spend an average of 10 hours every day with other people. These people could be family members, a spouse, co-workers, or friends. Whoever they are, note down the 5 people you spend the most time with.Ask yourself what you want from life; what level of success do you want to reach? Then ask yourself what each of these 5 individuals want from life, how ambitious are they? Are they making significant efforts towards their goals? Do their ambitions and efforts challenge you to better yourself? How happy are they? How enthusiastic are they? How supportive are they? Do they believe in you?Answer these questions as honestly as you can, evaluate each one of these peopl e carefully and determine if they are helping push you to the next level of your destination. Evaluate and determine if they are helping you bring your vision to fruition or deterring you from progressing. Once you have determined who is a positive influence to you and your goals then continue to spend time with them and distance yourself who is unhealthy for you.I know it is a difficult move to make and it doesn’t mean that you stop being friends or spending any amount of time with the ones you eliminate, it is simply removing their influence from your life because it is holding you back. It is simply seeking company that will mold you into the person your goals need you to be. It is being true to yourself and what you want out of life, which reminds me of a short statement I stumbled upon recently… ‘There is nothing selfish about doing what’s right for you.’However, note that during this process, it is not necessary for the people you choose to keep to be successful them selves. They just have to have a positive influence in your life, they just have to challenge you because they are dreamers who are working towards their own goals, they just have to believe in you and your dreams, they just have to accept you for who you are, encourage you, and inspire you to do the things it takes to accomplish your goals.Remember it’s about who you are around them and how they make you feel every time you encounter them. And if you have this kind of company, you will drive each other towards success, it’s just a matter of time, don’t let those ones go.Let’s look at what key aspects the people around you heavily influence, aspects that may very well be the determinant of whether you eventually succeed or fail.ChoicesFriends will commonly bond by giving one another the support to resist their vices/temptations. However, friends will also bond by encouraging one another to indulge in vices. For example, consider a habit such as smoking, when resisting the te mptation once you have decided to quit, it is highly likely that you will indulge if your friend decides to ‘just have one’ and from there it’s a snowball effect back to indulgence all over again.You are highly likely to act like the people you choose to surround yourself with. Surround yourself with people who consistently make poor decisions and you will find yourself eventually making similar decisions. On the other hand, surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you to better yourself and you increase your chances of attaining your goals.DisciplineIf you are struggling with your will power and discipline, surround yourself with people who have already mastered a high level of discipline in order to boost your own.   Discipline is absolutely necessary for any kind of accomplishment, big or small. When you surround yourself with undisciplined and inconsistent people you will eventually begin to allow yourself to slack off because they make it all look so easy a nd, let’s be honest, it’s much easier to slack off than to push through your schedule when you are not in the mood.Seek out people with an insane level of self-control/will-power and keep them close, this could very well be the secret to success. Whether you are feeing tempted to skip exercising at the gym or you are tempted to spend the week’s budget in a day or to skip a particular work session, having disciplined individuals around you will boost your motivation and willpower, helping you to stay focused on the bigger picture and eventually enabling you to master your own discipline.MotivationAs mentioned before, your company doesn’t need to have already attained success or even share similar goals. Your closest companions may not know too much detail about your passion, but they need to be people who cheer you on in your quest to see your vision come to fruition. For example, if you are planning to become an author, your best friend doesn’t necessarily have to have an interest in writing but he can engage you by asking you how your novel is coming along.When the company you keep is encouraging and shows genuine delightment in your progress, you will be motivated to keep up with your project. However, if you surround yourself with people who constantly put you down or who are always making sarcastic or demeaning remarks about your ambitions you might end up feeling discouraged, which will stall the progress of you growth and in a worst case scenario, lead to the failure of what would have possibly been a great success.Advice/Practical SupportGreat advice can save you a lot of time, money, and effort in your quest to achieve your goals. If you are fortunate enough to have a close companion or companions who has expertise in your field of interest and who is more than willing to give you guidance, this is the kind of person you should keep close.For example, assume you are starting a marketing company, it would be much better for the achievement of this goal to surround yourself with individuals who share similar passions or who are already established in the same field. If you are passionate about writing, seek out authors or people who share similar interests, with whom you can consult with and exchange advice and ideas.Note that although your closest companions may be encouraging and supportive of your vision, practical support is invaluable for the achievement of your goals, it may be the determining factor of whether you end up succeeding or failing.Actual guidance from the people who are capable of practically guide you, advising you on how to avoid common mistakes, recommending the best approaches towards your vision… offers you a higher chance of success. However, practical support can also come in other forms, for example, a friend who regularly watches your 5-year-old as you burn the midnight candle.So I do not mean completely abandon any good company that doesn’t share your passion, I just mean spending more tim e with people who share your interest or who are already established in that field will enable you to reach your goal faster, while spending more time with who do not may stunt your growth.If your friends are indeed good genuine friends, they will give you the space and support necessary to pursue your own ambitions as they are also pursuing their own.CONCLUSIONShape the direction of your life by carefully selecting the people you surround yourself with today. Begin by determining your own ambitions, what do you want out of life? Determine what kind of person you need to be to attain exactly that, then honestly examine the people you spend the most time with and determine whether they are good for the person you need to be. Are they pushing you towards your goals or are they dragging you down?Choose to reduce contact with anyone who is not encouraging your vision and increase contact with people who encourage and support you to be the person you need to be to reach your goals. Choos e to spend time with people who already possess the qualities you wish to master.For example, if your goal is to get into better physical shape by shedding off some weight, spend more time with people who take care of their own physical well-being and this will motivate you to keep at it. If you spend more time with people who do not care for their physical well-being, you will be demotivated to care for your own and indulge in the same unhealthy habits that put you in a not-so-healthy state to start with.If you want to start your own business, avoid spending time with pessimistic people and expose yourself to dreamers, enthusiastic and ambitious individuals who are determined to achieve their own dreams. If you spend more time with these driven high-energy individuals you will find yourself feeling increasingly ambitious and motivated to go for it. Am I right?Now, there is a second side to this coin. As much as other people are influencing you, do not forget that you are also influ encing the lives of others. Ask yourself; are you a good companion/friend? Are you a healthy person to be around? Are you motivational, supportive, encouraging? Are you a positive influence t those around you?Make sure that you are the best influence that you can be to those around you and ensure that you offer the best guidance, advice, and practical support to anyone who seeks it from you. Remember there is nothing wrong with doing what’s right for you, but you can’t just take all the time, you have to make time to give. Be a good example, who knows, maybe the people around just needed a little shove to transform themselves and position themselves for greatness.I hope our discussion has opened your eyes to the impact that our closest companions have on us and how they determine whether we reach the heights of success that we desire or not. Henry Ossawa Tanner - Free Essay Example

Henry Ossawa Tarner was an American painter who lived between the years 1859 and 1937. His early paintings were associated with African Americans. In one of his most popular paintings, The Banjo Lesson, he depicts an older man training a boy on how to play the banjo. This painting was created in 1893 when he was calling on his family in Philadelphia. He created another great painting in the year that followed. This painting was known as The thankful poor. He became a successful painter in the 19th century and gained admiration from both Americans and Europeans. It was in this century that he created another famous painting known as Nicodemus Visiting Jesus. This was an oil painting which had a biblical theme and led Tarner to win the Lippincott prize of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Even with the change of focus in his painting to biblical and religious themes, he was still a celebrated painter who was showered with praise and honor. In this essay, I will compare and contrast the use of color in his paintings, The Banjo Lesson, The Young Sabot Maker and The Two Disciples at the Tomb. The Banjo Lesson is one of the most famous paintings of Henry Ossawa Tarner. In the painting, a boy is being shown how to play the banjo by an older man. The surrounding is a log cabin and there seems to be a glow from the right corner of the painting which represents a source of light. The boy uses both of his hands to hold the banjo as he gazes downwards which a reflection of his complete concentration on the instructions is being given by the older man. The man helps in supporting the banjo by gently holding it with his left hand so that the boy is not overwhelmed by its weight. The staging of the painting depicts the idea that the man wants the boy to learn to play the instrument and reap the rewards of this through hardwork. The Banjo Lesson, Henry Ossawa Tarner. Oil painting. The Hampton University Museum in Virginia. Tanner uses a narrow palette in this painting. The painting is almost fully monochromatic. Earth tones are prominent in the painting and are seen in the floor planks, the wall and cabinet in the back, the chair and the coat that rests limply on it, the mans clothes and the boys pants and shirt. The earth tones are also seen in the mans complexion and the brown color of his pupil. The break away from this uniformity is brought about by the background with its blue shadows and yellow cloth. The earth tones suggest humility and plainness. The furniture in the painting appears rough and unfinished. There are only a few bright colors which represent the light from the fire. The only decorated items in the painting are the two pictures on the wall at the back. These are, however, small and not clearly defined. This brings forth the concept of simplicity and poverty. The match between the clothes of the man and boy and the setting suggests the attachment of these two people to the setting. The cabin appears to be a structure of restriction and the grey and brown hues suggest a lot about those in the painting. They are poverty stricken and lack elegance. The concept of inexactness is also brought forth by the intricacy and finite range of the earth tones and the complexion difference between the man and boy. The boy is similar to the man but does not match him exactly. Similarly, the hues of the clothing and setting match but not exactly. This shows that the people are attached to the cabin but cannot be reduced to its roughness. The brushwork in the painting compliments the color. He uses broad strokes for the light parts of the painting to represent the background and show quality of items. On the other hand, he uses careful strokes to represent the figures. This echoes the concept of inexactness with the setting. Similar to The Banjo Lesson, the Young Sabot Maker depicts a student learning from his master. In the painting, the older man watches the boy as he carves out a sabot using a sawhorse. The two are in a sabot makers shop with wood shavings The Young Sabot Maker, Henry Ossawa Tarner. Oil painting. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Scatterings all over the floor. Although in this painting the young sabot maker is white, the final painting portrays the young sabot maker as African-American rather than French given that at the time of creating this painting, Tarner was living in France and sabots were commonly worn in this country. This painting is very similar to The Banjo Lesson as there is a prominence of earth tones in the painting which can be seen in the wood shavings on the floor, the sabot being carved by the boy, the older mans complexion and coat, the crossbar handle of the sawhorse, the walls of the shop, the table at the back, the sabots and logs of wood that have been set aside and the door. The contrast from this uniformity is brought about by the clothes of the boy which are blue in color and his complexion. The earth tones in this painting are a representation of humility and poverty. Sabot makers were people of a humble income. They were mostly deemed the kind and poor class in society. The paint ing also has no items of decoration apart from the two candles on the wall which are difficult to make out. The items present in the painting are simple such as the walls with no paintings, the sabots being carved and those already made. The color of the clothing of the man is similar to those of the setting which gives the idea of the ownership of the sabot shop. The boy has different colors on his clothes that contrast with those of the setting and of the man and this is a representation of unfamiliarity. The boy is trying something that he is not used to doing and this is further emphasized by the fact that the man seems to be watching the boy despite working on his own sabots. The boy is in blue, a color that represents loyalty and faith. This points to the idea that the boy will likely work under the man as he further learns how to make sabots and the color is an expression of the loyalty of the boy to the man. The room is painted with dark hues of the earthy tones and light hues are only present in the right corner of the painting as was the case in The Banjo Lesson. Also, the painting utilizes rough and broad brushstrokes on items in the shop but they are more careful on the man and boy. This is a representation of the inexactness between the people in the painting and the setting. The painting also makes use of organic shapes in the sabots, items hanging next to the door and the wood on which the sabot is being carved. These irregular shapes emphasize nature and therefore further emphasize the simplicity of the figures as they obtain their raw materials from nature. The only difference in this painting is the race of the figures who appear to be white. However, as already mentioned, in the final painting the young boy is African-American. The Two Disciples at the Tomb, Henry Ossawa Tarner. Oil painting. Art Institute of Chicago The Two Disciples at the Tomb is thematically different from the other two paintings. It has a biblical theme and which Tarner adopted later on in France. The painting depicts Peter and John, as is in the gospel of saint John, at the tomb of Jesus but find no one in it. Peter gazes down grimly while John is rapt and his face is covered in white light which serves to represent the spirit of Christ in the tomb. Despite the difference in theme, there are several concepts such as contrast and color that still remain the same in this painting as with Tarners two other paintings. There is the use of dark colors in this painting such that the left portion of the painting is dark and the right portion is light owing to the source of light emanating from Christs spirit. The contrast in this case serves to represent a miracle. The contrast in color also sets the mood in the painting. Earth tones are also present as seen in the tomb, complexion of Peter, the background and Johns robe. This repr esents the disciples humble status. The right side of the painting has darker colors that can be seen in the surrounding and in the clothing of the disciples. This sets a gloomy and dark mood as the disciples did not find Jesus in the tomb. The left side of the painting is light which represents a joyous mood. This joy is derived from the glory of the spirit of Christ. The lines in the painting complement the color as they are vertical hence create a feeling of spirituality as vertical lines perpendicularity to the earth leads upwards to the sky. Henry Ossawa Tarner was a great American painter with several famous works of art. He commonly represented African Americans in his art as is seen in The Banjo Lesson and final copy of The Young Sabot Maker which is different from the one shown. He also commonly represented poverty and simplicity in his paintings through the use of earth tones as is seen in all the paintings above. Adze a Tool For Working Wood

An adze (or adz) is a woodworking tool, one of several tools used in ancient times to perform carpentry tasks. Archaeological evidence suggests that the first Neolithic farmers used adzes for everything from felling trees to shaping and assembling wooden architecture such as roof timbers, as well as constructing furniture, boxes for two- and four-wheeled vehicles, and walls for subterranean wells.   Other essential tools for the ancient and modern carpenter include axes, chisels, saws, gouges, and rasps. Woodworking toolkits vary widely from culture to culture and time to time: the earliest adzes date from the Middle Stone Age period of about 70,000 years ago, and were part of a generalized hunting toolkit.   Adzes can be made of a wide variety of materials: ground or polished stone, flaked stone, shell, animal bone, and metal (typically copper, bronze, iron).   Defining Adzes Adzes are generally defined in the archaeological literature as distinct from axes on several bases. Axes are for hewing trees; adzes for shaping wood. Axes are set in a handle such that the working edge is parallel to the handle; the working edge of an adze is set to be  perpendicular to the handle.   Adzes are bifacial tools with a pronounced asymmetry: they are plano-convex in cross-section. Adzes have a domed upper side and a flat bottom, often with a distinct bevel towards the cutting edge. In contrast, axes are generally symmetrical, with biconvex cross sections. The working edges on both flaked stone types are wider than one inch (2 centimeters).  Ã‚   Similar tools with working edges of less than an inch are generally classified as chisels, which can have varied cross sections (lenticular, plano-convex, triangular). Identifying Adzes Archaeologically Without the handle, and despite the literature defining adzes as plano-convex in shape, it can be difficult to distinguish adzes from axes, because in the real world, the artifacts are not bought in a Home Depot but made for a specific purpose and perhaps sharpened or used for another purpose. A series of techniques have been created to ameliorate, but as yet not resolve, this issue. These techniques include:   Use-wear: the examination by macroscopic and microscopic techniques of the working edges of a tool to identify striations and nicks that have accumulated over its use-life and may be compared to experimental examples.  Plant residue analysis: the recovery of microscopic organic leavings including pollen, phytoliths, and stable isotopes from whatever plant was being worked.  Traceology: the examination by macroscopic and microscopic techniques of well-preserved pieces of wood to identify marks left behind by the woodworking process.   All of these methods rely on experimental archaeology, reproducing stone tools and using them to work wood to identify a pattern which might be expected on ancient relics.   Earliest Adzes Adzes are among the earliest type of stone tool identified in the archaeological record and recorded regularly in Middle Stone Age Howiesons Poort sites such as Boomplaas Cave, and Early Upper Paleolithic sites throughout Europe and Asia. Some scholars argue for the presence of proto-adzes in some Lower Paleolithic site—that is, invented by our hominid ancestors Homo erectus. Upper Paleolithic In the Upper Paleolithic of the Japanese islands, adzes are part of a trapezoid technology, and the make up a fairly small portion of the assemblages at such sites as the Douteue site in Shizuoka prefecture. Japanese archaeologist Takuya Yamoaka reported on obsidian adzes as part of hunting toolkits on sites dated approximately 30,000 years ago (BP). The Douteue site stone trapezoid assemblages as a whole were basally hafted and heavily used, before being left behind broken and discarded. Flaked and groundstone adzes are also regularly recovered from Upper Paleolithic sites in Siberia and other places in the Russian Far East (13,850–11,500 cal BP), according to archaeologists Ian Buvit and Terry Karisa. They make up small but important parts of hunter-gatherer toolkits.   Dalton Adzes Dalton adzes are flaked stone tools from Early Archaic Dalton (10,500–10,000 BP/12,000-11,500 cal BP) sites in the central United States. An experimental study on them by U.S. archaeologists Richard Yerkes and Brad Koldehoff found that the Dalton adzes were a new tool form introduced by Dalton. They are very common on Dalton sites, and usewear studies show they were heavily used, made, hafted, resharpened, and recycled in a similar fashion by several groups.   Yerkes and Koldehoff suggest that at the transition period between the Pleistocene and Holocene, changes in climate, particularly in hydrology and landscape, created a need and desire for river travel. Although neither Dalton wooden tools or dugout canoes from this period have survived, the heavy use of the adzes identified in the technological and microwear analysis indicates they were used for felling trees and likely manufacturing canoes.   Neolithic Evidence for Adzes While wood-working—specifically making wooden tools—is clearly very old, the processes of clearing woods, building structures, and making furniture and dugout canoes are part of the European Neolithic set of skills that were required for the successful migration from hunting and gathering to sedentary agriculture.   A series of Neolithic wooden-walled wells dated to the Linearbandkeramik period of central Europe have been found and intensively studied. Wells are particularly useful for the study of traceology, because water-logging is known to preserve wood.   In 2012, German archaeologists Willy Tegel and colleagues reported evidence for a sophisticated level of carpentry at Neolithic sites. Four very well-preserved eastern German wooden well walls dated between 5469–5098 BCE provided Tegel and colleagues an opportunity to identify refined carpentry skills by scanning high-resolution images and producing computer models. They found that early Neolithic carpenters built sophisticated corner joins and log constructions, using a series of stone adzes to cut and trim the timber. Bronze Age Adzes A 2015 study on Bronze Age use of a copper ore deposit called Mitterberg in Austria used a very detailed traceology study to reconstruct woodworking tools. Austrian archaeologists Kristà ³f Kovà ¡cs and Klaus Hanke used a combination of laser scanning and photogrammetric documentation on a well-preserved sluice box found at Mitterberg, dated to the 14th century BCE by dendrochronology.   The photo-realistic images of the 31 wooden objects that made up the sluice box were then scanned for tool mark recognition, and the researchers used a workflow segmentation process combined with experimental archaeology to determine that the box was created using four different hand tools: two adzes, an axe, and a chisel to complete the joining.   Adzes Takeaways An adze is one of several woodworking tools used in prehistoric times to fell trees and construct furniture, boxes for two- and four-wheeled vehicles, and walls for subterranean wells.  Adzes were made of a variety of materials, shell, bone, stone and metal, but typically have a domed upper side and a flat bottom, often with a distinct bevel towards the cutting edge.The earliest adzes in the world date to the Middle Stone Age period in South Africa, but they became much more important in the Old World at the time of the emergence of agriculture; and in Eastern North America, to respond to climate change at the end of the Pleistocene.   Sources Bentley, R. Guy Endore tells the story of the drastic slave history through the eyes of an African – Babouk. He starts by focusing on the cargo of a French slaver during the late years of the eighteenth century. He explores the characteristics of a slave trade through his presentation of the ship and its primary quest. In general, what makes the story terribly disturbing is the way by which one race maltreats the other because of their difference in color, race, and cultural structures. This was shown when the slaves were stricken with opthalmia during their long, tiring, and devastatingly miserable trip towards San Domingo. During the voyage to the enslaved land, those who failed to meet and satisfy the standards of â€Å"slave eligibility† because of the disabilities that they developed (such as the loss of the sense of sight) were disposed in an inhuman way- being thrown overboard to drown and die. As the slaves reach their unfortunate destination of lifelong enslavement, the story becomes much worse as the once free men take their roles as full-pledged slaves under the rule of â€Å"masters† who treat them disdainfully and without any sign of gratitude and appreciation. However, the drastic enslavement also brings about a positive effect on the part of the Haitians. The slavery drives them to fight. The pain of being treated appallingly and the feeling of being taken away from their home and families eventually evolved into an urge to fight and defend themselves. The slavery of their white fellows transformed them into revolutionaries which eventually became as harsh as they were. Unfortunately, the supposed enlightenment of the slaves ended in their tragic death. Apathy yields indifference In the story of Babouk, readers were provided with a glimpse of how dreadful early Americans treated their potential slaves. In the story, they showed no signs of remorse in what they were doing. They failed to recognize that Africans like Babouk had the same rights and privileges that they enjoyed. They equated their potential slaves in the same way that they treat beasts of burden and tools for trade and profit. They showed no apathy and acted as if the indifference was a normal part of life and living. In effect, they instilled hatred in the heart of their slaves and they promoted the idea that a human being may treat their fellows in an inhuman way, for as long as they can delineate differences in their race and culture. They showed that violence was normal part of societal interaction and that â€Å"survival of the fittest† exists not only in the jungle. In response to this elaborate show of apathy, they harvested nothing but indifference from their revolutionist slaves. The most disturbing demonstration of this sadistic harvest is when Babouk threw a white child on the ground, struck a pike into its innocent and defenseless body, and used it as a banner.
